Tim Scott, U.S. Senator from South Carolina, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing current policy issues and appointments.
On September 24, 2025, Scott congratulated Dr. Ben Carson on his new role in federal government, stating: “A well-earned congratulations to Dr. @RealBenCarson on being sworn in as @USDA’s National Advisor for Nutrition, Health, and Housing! From successful, groundbreaking surgeries to leadership in housing policy, his experience will be key to improving health and strengthening”.
Later that same day, Scott criticized Democratic policies regarding government spending and immigration. He wrote: “Democrats are sending a clear message: they’d rather make Americans foot the bill for illegal immigrants’ health care than ensure our troops get paid, our veterans receive the care they earned, and vital services keep running for American families.”
Two days later on September 26, 2025, Scott addressed concerns over impending deadlines affecting federal programs: “Funding for critical programs, such as the National Flood Insurance Program, expires on 9/30. Democrats risking a shutdown and letting NFIP lapse with a hurricane near South Carolina is reckless. @SenateGOP and I are working to keep the government open and protect vital”.
The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is essential for providing flood insurance to property owners in communities that participate in FEMA’s program. If funding lapses due to a government shutdown or legislative delays, new policies cannot be issued or renewed until funding is restored. This can create uncertainty for homeowners—especially during hurricane season—who rely on this coverage to protect their properties.
Government shutdowns have historically affected multiple sectors including military paychecks and veterans’ services when Congress fails to pass appropriations bills by fiscal deadlines. Debates about budget priorities often center around disagreements between political parties regarding funding allocations for various programs such as defense spending versus healthcare access for different populations.
Dr. Ben Carson has previously served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Donald Trump’s administration. His appointment as USDA’s National Advisor for Nutrition, Health, and Housing reflects an ongoing effort by the agency to integrate expertise from multiple disciplines into policymaking processes concerning public health and housing stability.
