U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, who serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has expressed concerns following his meeting with Harmeet Dhillon. Dhillon is President Trump's nominee for Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division.

Durbin stated, "We’re witnessing an unprecedented weaponization of the Justice Department right now, at the direction of President Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and FBI Director Kash Patel." He further questioned Dhillon's ability to be an independent voice in the Civil Rights Division due to her past role as a lawyer for President Trump and her involvement in efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

During their meeting, Durbin emphasized the importance of protecting civil rights across various areas. "I pressed Ms. Dhillon on the importance of protecting civil rights for all Americans, including voting rights, reproductive rights, the rights of LGBTQ+ Americans, and marriage equality," he said.

Durbin mentioned that he is still reviewing Dhillon's record and anticipates further discussions during her hearing scheduled for tomorrow.
