U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has expressed concerns following a meeting with Todd Blanche, President Trump's nominee for Deputy U.S. Attorney General. Durbin's statement highlights issues related to maintaining the independence of Department of Justice investigations and prosecutions from presidential influence.
Durbin noted his skepticism about Blanche's ability to maintain this independence due to Blanche's previous role as a personal attorney for President Trump and recent significant changes at the Justice Department under Trump's administration. These changes include the removal of senior career law enforcement officials at both the DOJ and FBI, along with potential further dismissals.
Additionally, Durbin raised concerns over pardons granted in connection with the January 6 insurrectionists. He emphasized that it is crucial for the Senate to exercise its constitutional duty by thoroughly reviewing all relevant information regarding Blanche's nomination.
Durbin stated, "The American people deserve leaders at the Justice Department who will protect their fundamental rights, demonstrate independence and integrity, and remain faithful to the Constitution, the country, and the rule of law above all."
