U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, along with other Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats, has addressed a letter to Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley concerning Kash Patel's nomination to lead the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The Senators have requested additional scrutiny and hearings due to concerns over Mr. Patel's past testimonies and actions.
The letter emphasizes the need for an additional hearing where Mr. Patel would be required to answer questions under oath about various issues, including recent removals and reassignments of FBI career civil servants and his testimony in President Trump's classified documents case. The Senators also urged Chairman Grassley to join them in requesting relevant sections of the "Final Report of the Special Counsel’s Investigations and Prosecutions" from the Department of Justice.
The letter highlights misleading statements made by Mr. Patel during his initial confirmation hearing, particularly regarding his involvement with the "J6 choir," composed of January 6 insurrectionists imprisoned in D.C., as well as his alleged unfamiliarity with Stewart Peters, despite evidence suggesting otherwise.
Senator Durbin noted that Mr. Patel's testimony contradicted his previous public acknowledgments about producing a record involving imprisoned January 6 insurrectionists. Furthermore, there are discrepancies regarding Mr. Patel's interactions with Stewart Peters, which call into question the truthfulness of his sworn testimony before the Committee.
The Senators concluded their letter by stressing the importance of having a comprehensive understanding of Mr. Patel’s record before proceeding with his nomination. They emphasized that it is crucial for a potential FBI Director to demonstrate truthfulness, trustworthiness, and respect for safeguarding classified information.
In addition to Senator Durbin, other signatories include U.S. Senators Sheldon Whitehouse, Amy Klobuchar, Chris Coons, Richard Blumenthal, Mazie Hirono, Cory Booker, Alex Padilla, Peter Welch, and Adam Schiff.
