In a recent Senate floor speech, U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin expressed concerns about Pam Bondi, President Trump's nominee for Attorney General. Durbin questioned Bondi's capacity to serve independently, citing her refusal to acknowledge President Biden's victory in the 2020 election and her alignment with Trump's calls to prosecute political opponents.

Durbin highlighted the Trump Administration's removal of senior career civil servants from the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He argued that this demonstrated the need for an independent DOJ. "This week, the Senate will vote on the nomination of Pam Bondi to serve as Attorney General. Given the Trump Administration’s ongoing purge of Justice Department officials, I urge my colleagues to look very carefully and closely at Ms. Bondi’s nomination," he stated.

Durbin criticized Trump's preference for loyalty over independence in an Attorney General. He remarked, "President Trump has repeatedly made it clear that he values loyalty above all else in an Attorney General." Durbin warned that Bondi might fulfill this expectation due to her past actions and statements.

Durbin emphasized his skepticism regarding Bondi's dedication to maintaining a nonpartisan DOJ free from undue political influence. He noted her involvement in efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and her support for prosecuting political opponents. "It seems that she [Ms. Bondi] is ready to break with bipartisan tradition when it comes to a nonpartisan Department of Justice—one that upholds the rule of law and is free of undue political influence from the White House," Durbin said.

The speech also addressed recent removals within DOJ and FBI ranks, linked to investigations concerning the January 6 Capitol attack and President Trump. Durbin criticized these actions as politically motivated: "The Trump Administration’s purge of these officials is a naked political move."

He concluded by stressing the importance of having an Attorney General who demonstrates independence and integrity: "The American people deserve an Attorney General who will protect their fundamental rights... I fear that Ms. Bondi will only protect and remain faithful to one person throughout this whole experience—and that’s the President who has given her this opportunity."
