Kash Patel has been accused of exaggerating and misleading to further his own interests, as well as those of former President Donald Trump. Allegations against Patel include overstating professional experience, providing unreliable testimony, and promoting falsehoods for personal gain.
Patel initially praised Trump's efforts in developing the COVID-19 vaccine but later cast doubt on its efficacy while encouraging the purchase of supplements based on unfounded theories about vaccine dangers.
Regarding the events of January 6th, Patel claimed that Trump authorized the deployment of the National Guard, a statement contradicted by Acting Defense Secretary Miller's testimony. A state court judge found Patel to be "not a credible witness," describing his testimony as "illogical" and lacking evidence.
Patel's claims about his professional roles have also been questioned. He stated he was responsible for U.S. counterterrorism policy while working at the NSC, but John Bolton, former National Security Advisor, doubted Patel's qualifications. Additionally, emails suggest that during his time with ODNI, Patel focused on declassifying documents rather than overseeing intelligence agencies.
Patel described the "Nunes Memo," which he helped write, as a significant report internally known as "the Kash-Gowdy memo." However, this claim appears only in his book. Despite concerns from the Justice Department and FBI regarding its release without review due to accuracy issues, Trump supported releasing it publicly in February 2018.
In his Senate Judiciary Questionnaire, Patel mentioned collaborating on Benghazi-related cases. However, former Justice Department officials noted that he exaggerated his role and left after less than a year following complaints reaching senior officials.
U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin commented: "Kash Patel’s repeated exaggerations and misleading statements to advance his own personal and political interests are gravely concerning and reflect poorly on his judgment."
