U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin, serving as the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, delivered a critical opening statement during the nomination hearing for Kash Patel, President Trump's nominee for FBI Director. Durbin expressed significant concerns about Patel's qualifications and suitability for the role.

Durbin questioned Patel's experience and temperament to lead an agency as vast as the FBI, noting his previous support for Republican nominees in similar positions. He stated, "Mr. Patel has neither the experience, the temperament, nor the judgment to lead an agency of 38,000 [people] and 400 field offices around the globe."

He contrasted President Biden's retention of an FBI Director appointed by Trump with Trump's history of dismissing previous directors over loyalty issues. Durbin commented on Patel's loyalty to Trump: "With Mr. Patel, obviously the President has found a loyalist."

Durbin highlighted Patel's promotion of conspiracy theories and threats against perceived enemies in his book "Government Gangsters," urging committee members to read it before voting. He mentioned Patel’s list of individuals labeled as 'members of the deep state,' which includes respected public servants.

Further criticisms were directed at Patel’s plans concerning the FBI headquarters and his aggressive stance towards media personnel. Durbin asked rhetorically if such actions align with those expected from a nonpartisan law enforcement leader.

Addressing January 6 events, Durbin condemned Patel's social media comments disparaging Capitol Police officers and implicating them in conspiracies regarding that day. He emphasized that such views are inconsistent with leading an agency responsible for national security.

Durbin concluded by stressing that America needs an FBI Director focused on public safety rather than personal grievances: "The American people deserve an FBI Director who is focused on keeping the public safe from terrorism, drug trafficking, and violent crime."

Video and audio recordings of Durbin’s statement are available for further review.
