U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin has expressed strong opposition to President Donald Trump's nominee for FBI Director, Kash Patel. Following a meeting with Patel, Durbin stated, "Kash Patel has neither the experience, the temperament, nor the judgment to lead the FBI."
Durbin emphasized the importance of the FBI's role in national security: "We were reminded on 9/11 that the FBI is the first agency we rely on to keep America safe. The 30,000 professionals at the FBI have the skills and resources to protect us. They deserve a leader who understands the gravity of their mission."
He criticized Patel's political affiliations and questioned his preparedness for leading such an important agency: "Mr. Patel’s political grievances make him a favorite of the MAGA world, but they have not prepared him to work night and day to keep us safe from violent crime, drug trafficking, terrorism, and other threats. Mr. Patel is the wrong choice to lead the FBI."
Earlier this month, Durbin took action by sending letters to various federal agencies including the Department of Defense (DOD), Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), and Department of Justice (DOJ). He requested all relevant materials related to alleged misconduct by Patel during his tenure in different roles within these agencies.
The allegations against Patel include impeding administrative transitions between Trump and Biden administrations, politicizing declassification processes for Trump's benefit, and collaborating with Jeffrey Clark in efforts related to subverting election results.
Durbin also asked DOJ for records concerning any other misconduct allegations or criminal referrals involving Patel during his federal service.
