WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) has proposed a new bill called the Creating Opportunity for Athletic Coaches to Help Educate Students (COACHES) Act. This Act aims to amend the tax code to allow K-12 coaches to be classified as "eligible educators" so they can receive tax deductions for certain out-of-pocket instructional expenses.

Senator Scott believes that coaches and athletic administrators play a crucial role in the success of students both inside and outside the classroom. He states, "Coaches and athletic administrators are integral to the success of students both in and out of the classroom, providing mentorship and lessons that can last a lifetime. I'm proud to introduce legislation which supports these essential educators as they continue to personally invest in the future of students across America."

The COACHES Act has garnered support from various organizations such as the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA), National Football League, Major League Soccer, Sports and Fitness Industry Association, Nike, Adidas, and National Basketball Association. These organizations recognize the importance of coaches in shaping the lives of students and are backing the legislation.

Senator Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) is a co-sponsor of the COACHES Act, showing bipartisan support for the bill.

The full text of the legislation can be found on Senator Scott's official website.

The proposed COACHES Act seeks to address a longstanding issue faced by K-12 coaches, who often have to bear the burden of out-of-pocket expenses for their instructional activities. These expenses can include purchasing equipment, organizing practice sessions, and attending coaching clinics or conferences.

By allowing coaches to be classified as "eligible educators," they will be able to take advantage of tax deductions available to teachers. This will alleviate some of the financial strain they face and recognize their contributions as educators.

The COACHES Act is a step towards acknowledging the important role that coaches play in the development of students. As Senator Scott rightly points out, the impact of coaches goes beyond the sports field. They provide mentorship and life lessons that can shape the future of their students.

With the support of various organizations and bipartisan sponsorship, the COACHES Act has the potential to have a positive impact on coaches and students across the country. It recognizes the dedication and investment that coaches make in the future of their students and aims to provide them with the necessary support.

As the COACHES Act makes its way through the legislative process, it is hoped that it will receive the support it deserves. By expanding the educator tax deduction to include coaches, we can ensure that these essential educators are properly recognized and supported in their important work.
