Several Jewish organizations have written to the Senate Judiciary Committee, expressing their opposition to the nomination of Adeel Abdullah Mangi to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Mangi's association with the Rutgers' Center for Security, Race and Rights, which has been known for promoting anti-Semitic rhetoric, has raised concerns among these groups.
The Coalition for Jewish Values, one of the organizations opposing Mangi's nomination, emphasized that their concerns are not related to his religious background or faith. They stated, "Mr. Mangi's alliance with the Center raises genuine concerns about his judgment and his commitment to American principles." The coalition urged the committee to wait for a more suitable candidate, untainted by associations with anti-Semitic organizations.
In a letter dated January 16, 2024, the Zionist Organization of America, Americans Against Antisemitism, StopAntisemitism, and Students Supporting Israel also voiced their objections to Mangi's nomination. They highlighted Mangi's assertions that he was only a member of the CSRR Advisory Board and had no knowledge of or responsibility for the organization's activities and statements. Drawing a parallel, they stated, "If a nominee for a top judicial post asserted that he was merely a Ku Klux Klan advisory board member, his nomination would be flatly rejected. Mangi likewise must not be confirmed."
These Jewish organizations further emphasized that the support for Mangi's nomination does not reflect the views of the majority of American Jews or decent Americans. They strongly urged the Senate to vote against Mangi's confirmation.
The concerns raised by these Jewish groups highlight the importance of thoroughly examining the background and associations of judicial nominees. In a time when anti-Semitic hatred is on the rise, it is crucial to ensure that those appointed to influential positions uphold American principles and do not have ties to organizations promoting hate speech.
As the Senate Judiciary Committee considers Mangi's nomination, the voices of these Jewish organizations and their concerns should be taken into serious consideration. The nomination process should prioritize candidates who are free from associations with groups that promote hatred and discrimination, ensuring that the judiciary continues to represent the values of justice and equality.
