Nonprofit Honors Richland County Councilwoman Newton for Green Efforts | Richland County

A local nonprofit focused on cleanup and other green efforts recently honored Richland County Councilwoman Chakisse Newton for promoting beautification across the Midlands.

Keep the Midlands Beautiful (KMB) highlighted Newton’s efforts at its annual Gala for a Greener Midlands before presenting her with the 2022 Green Elected Official Award on Tuesday during Council’s special called meeting. KMB promotes recycling, litter reduction and beautification in Richland and Lexington counties.

“As a resident, I take pride in doing what I can to keep Richland County clean and beautiful,” Newton (District 11) said of the honor. Watch a video of Newton speaking about her beautification efforts in the community on the County’s YouTube page: https://youtu.be/SagECoxLyrQ.

The Green Elected Official Award is given to an officeholder who advocates efforts to keep local communities clean, green and enjoyable for all.

Newton’s coordination of several neighborhood Clean Sweeps, in collaboration with Richland County Special Services, as well as volunteer litter cleanups, have been critical not only in reducing trash and increasing beautification in Lower Richland, but in boosting engagement with residents.

“Organizing litter cleanups and other volunteer efforts allows me to roll up my sleeves and get to work in the community,” Newton said. “Doing these things also gives me the opportunity to meet and work alongside residents who care about Richland County as much as I do.”

Along with her other efforts, Newton is a frequent supporter of the Adopt-a-Highway program. She regularly solicits volunteers to help collect litter while also participating herself.

KMB Executive Director Ebonee Gadson presented the award to Newton, calling the selection “a perfect example of the how communities are strengthened when local government and community partners work collaboratively.”
