Richland County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) is calling all superheroes to assemble for a race against child abuse on Saturday, Sept. 17.
Participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero and lace up their running shoes for the Superhero 5K and Family Fun Day at Doko Meadows Park, 171 Langford Road, Blythewood.
Proceeds from the event will go directly toward serving abused and neglected children in Richland County. Those who attend can also connect with CASA, learning about ways to volunteer and get involved with the organization, which advocates for children in Richland County Family Court.
“This event allows us to educate the community on the plight of child abuse in Richland County,” said Alexis Scurry of CASA. “When we share that information, we find people want to do something to help.”
The event schedule includes:
- 8 a.m. – 5K run/walk
- 10 a.m. – 100-meter kids’ dash
- 11 a.m. – costume contest for adults, children and dogs

CASA’s Mission
Richland County CASA volunteers serve as guardians ad litem, helping provide quality volunteer and legal representation to ensure every child a safe, permanent and nurturing home.
A CASA volunteer is responsible for recommending the best possible outcome for abused and neglected children. Volunteers review records, conduct research and investigate a child’s situation by interacting with social workers, parents, teachers, family members and the children themselves.
“One of the quotes that we use frequently in CASA is, ‘All children need heroes, but abused and neglected children need superheroes,’” Scurry said.
“We consider those guardians that service our kids as superheroes because they take time out of their busy schedules, time away from their family and friends, just to ensure they are available to advocate on behalf of children in Richland County Family Court.”
