Learn About Wills, Estates, Trusts at Probate Court Event

An upcoming event will give Richland County residents insight on the various functions of probate court, covering wills and estates, marriage licenses, and trust and estate litigation, among other topics.

County Probate Judge Amy McCulloch will speak at the free event, “Being Prepared with Probate Court,” set for 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 in Council Chambers inside the County Administration Building, 2020 Hampton St., Columbia.

“Many Richland County residents will need to go through probate court when it comes to appointing guardianships or administering wills,” said Marc Ridlehoover, County neighborhood planner. “Through this event, attendees will have a better understanding and be more prepared, should that time come.”

McCulloch will talk about the ins and outs of the probate court process and answer questions about the court’s various functions, which include:

  • administering estates and executing wills
  • issuing marriage licenses
  • appointing guardianships and conservatorships
  • ordering involuntary commitments of mentally ill or chemically dependent people
  • hearing and deciding trust and estate litigation
The event is part of the County Neighborhood Improvement Program’s (NIP) relaunched SPEED (Sustainability, Planning, Education, Engagement, Development) effort. First launched in 2020, SPEED is a yearlong program featuring events geared toward training and engaging the community.

To keep up with SPEED events year round, visit the County’s website: www.richlandcountysc.gov, and navigate to the Neighborhood Planning events page. For more information, email NIP@richlandcountysc.gov.
