Richland County residents can drop off a variety of unwanted household items during Richland Recycles Day on Saturday, May 14.

The free event will be from 8 a.m. to noon at the S.C. State Fairgrounds, 1200 Rosewood Drive, Columbia, and is open to Richland County residents only. Identification will be required. Commercial businesses cannot drop off items.

The following items will be accepted:

  • Electronics – computers, printers, TVs and telephones
  • Scrap metal – appliances, bicycles, metal chairs, metal shelving, and lawn mowers with no gasoline or oil
  • Tires (car, light truck, motorcycle)
  • Household hazardous waste – paint, stains, sealers, solvents, household cleaners, household chemicals, pool chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, acids, bases, mercury, fire extinguishers and propane tanks
  • Paper for shredding (up to five boxes or bags per household)
“Richland Recycles Day is an annual opportunity to not only to do some sprinhttps://www.richlandcountysc.gov/Government/Departments/Public-Works/Solid-Waste-Recyclingg cleaning and rid yourself of those hard-to-dispose-of items, but to be good stewards of our environment and recycle responsibly,” said Syndi Castelluccio, the County’s Solid Waste and Recycling collections manager.

Since 2020, the County has collected a combined 150 tons of waste during similar drop-off events at the fairgrounds.

“Drop-off events like this throughout the year help showcase a number of the solid waste and recycling services available to Richland County residents every day and at no additional cost,” Castelluccio said.

Richland County’s C&D Landfill and Lower Richland Drop-off Center accept items such as tires, paint, scrap metal, furniture, appliances and e-waste year-round. Get information on these locations or search the Waste Wizard tool on the County website or on the Richland Solid Waste app.
