U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) confirmed his COVID-19 diagnosis just days after seeing President Joe Biden.
”Tonight, I received a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. This is a breakthrough case, and I am asymptomatic,” Clyburn tweeted Dec. 22. “America is in a new phase of this pandemic. No one is immune. I urge anyone who has not done so to protect themselves by getting vaccinated and boosted.”
Concerns continued to rise after the South Carolina congressman, who is fully vaccinated, was seen in close contact with Biden after Biden traveled to the state to speak to graduates of South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, Clyburn's alma mater, according to NBC News.
Clyburn initially tested negative before his Thursday meeting with the president, but he later received an "inconclusive" result upon testing again ahead of his granddaughter's wedding. The results prompted the congressman to quarantine and take another test on Dec. 20, the results of which arrived on Dec. 22. He has not reported any symptoms.
“It is a huge sacrifice to miss my granddaughter’s wedding, but it is an unfortunate reality that is playing out all across this country due to the proliferation of this virus," Clyburn told NBC News. "We all must do everything we can to keep one another safe and healthy."
