Wastewater and radioactive waste treatment solutions company AVANTech, LLC, said it's investing $3.6 million to expand into Richland County, which is expected to create 17 new jobs.

The expansion will be located at 2050 American Italian Way in Columbia and will span 30 acres of land, according to Nov. 10 release from Gov. Henry McMaster’s office.

AVANTech President Jim Braun said in the release he was happy to expand in the state of South Carolina, which is where the company was founded by Braun and Tracy Barker in 1999.

He said the state is a great place to start a small business and since AVANTech was founded it has grown to more than 200 employees that serve 15 countries.

“We have provided solutions to many of the world’s toughest problems including radioactive water treatment after the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan and the U.S. Department of Energy high-level radioactive liquid waste tanks,” Braun said in the release.

McMaster called the expansion a “tremendous win for the Midlands.”

Secretary of Commerce Harry Lightsey III agreed, saying that the announcement is proof that South Carolina is a good spot for businesses to thrive.

“South Carolina’s business-friendly climate continues to shine, and when great companies like this expand in our state, we know we are doing something right,” McMaster said in the release.

The project is expected to be completed in stages and culminating in 2025. People interested in employment can find information on the AVANTech career page.
