In a nod to Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Violence Policy Center recently released a study that shows South Carolina ranking sixth in the nation for women killed by men.

Nationwide, 1,795 females were murdered by men. In South Carolina alone, 57 women were killed and 92% of those women were murdered by someone they knew and 65% of those who knew their offender were girlfriends, wives, common-law wives, or ex-wives.

“My first reaction was that it was gut-wrenching and that we need to use our voice and we need to make the community know that this is a true public health crisis,” Tosha Connors, CEO of My Sister's House, told ABC News 4

The South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault commemorated its 40th anniversary this year in "promoting the prevention of domestic violence and sexual assault in South Carolina," according to its website.

"Ending domestic violence is an issue that is deeply personal to me. I started my career as SC's first #VAWA director and I will always advocate for survivors," State Sen. Mia McLeod (D-SC) tweeted Oct. 11. "If you or someone you love is in an abusive relationship and needs help, call the 24/7 National Domestic Violence Helpline at 1–800–799-SAFE (7233)."
