The Richland County Transportation Department will conduct a public input session Oct. 14, opening up the floor for residents to ask questions and discuss the county's plans to widen part of Spears Creek Church Road, from Two Notch Road to Interstate 20.

It is just one of 14 widening projects included in the Penny Transportation Tax program, which residents voted to approve in 2012, according to a Sept. 21 release by Richland County. The session will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Pontiac Elementary School, 500 Spears Creek Church Road, Elgin.

The program generates funding for a variety of transportation improvements throughout the county, which approved $29 million to cover all aspects of the project, from design through construction.

“This project will address safety and traffic concerns for residents who use Spears Creek Church Road every day,” Richland County Council District 9 Councilwoman Jesica Mackey said in the release. “We want to make sure residents whom these plans impact can give their input and make sure their voices are heard.”

Residents will be able to review the proposal for the Spears Creek widening and offer feedback to staff during the meeting.

In addition to attending the meeting, residents may provide input by email, transportationpenny@richlandcountysc.gov, by phone, 803-766-5605, or mail to Richland County Transportation, P.O. Box 192, Columbia, SC 29202.
