The University of South Carolina men's soccer team lost a close match against the University of South Carolina Upstate, 1-0, at Stone Stadium on Sept. 17.
"The message was that I was pleased with their effort and with the way they played," Gamecocks head coach Tony Annan said in a statemenb by gamcocksonline.com. "I'm disappointed we lost 1-0 on a set piece. We created probably double digits in terms of chances, but didn't put much on target or anything near it.
"I'm proud of the way they played and the way they worked. Again, I saw progress, but not for long enough."
Indeed, the key "set piece" came in the 52nd minute of the match on a corner kick for the Spartans, as Hayden Anderson headed home the game-clincher on an assist from Mario Arrocha.
The Gamecocks had a 13-5 advantage in shots and a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal, according the statement.
Early on in the match in the sixth minute, the Gamecocks looked to claim the lead, only to have the goal called off due to offsides.
