Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin recently presented the key to the city to Bob Hughes, owner and founder of Hughes Development Corporation, in recognition of his participation in municipal development and his vision of the Bullstreet District.

Hughes Development Corporation purchased the Bullstreet District from the state in 2015, to develop the area for community use and historically preserving 10 buildings, according to Daily Gamecock.

The Bullstreet District project is a 20-year plan that is now the largest city development east of the Mississippi River. The project seeks to transform land on Columbia's undeveloped east coast into a new residential and commercial district.

"It was my great pleasure to present the Key to the @CityofColumbia to Bob Hughes, founder of the family-owned Hughes Development Corporation, in recognition of his life of shaping municipal living, work & recreation spaces, as shown by his vision for our @BullStreetSCProject," Benjamin tweeted Aug. 3.

The project envisions a vibrant, bustling district where workers from tech companies and Fortune 500 companies can come together in the vicinity of a minor league baseball stadium.

The project is attracting a number of businesses to the district, in August 2020, outerwear apparel company REI opened a 20,000-foot store in the district, and Starbucks opened a location in January 2021.
