South Carolina women’s tennis team falls to North Carolina in NCAA Tournament

The South Carolina women’s tennis team lost to North Carolina, 4-0, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on May 2.

The match was held in Chapel Hill and saw No. 32 South Carolina facing No. 5 North Carolina. The loss ends South Carolina’s run in this year’s tournament.

In doubles play, Jane Dunyon and Sara Borkop were first to finish for the Gamecocks, losing on court three by a score of 6-0. Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald, ranked No. 12 nationally as a duo, tried to rally from an early deficit but were trailing when their match was left unfinished at 2-5. North Carolina secured the doubles point with a win over Kaitlyn Carnicella and Jana Stojanova on court two, finishing that set at 6-1.

During singles competition, South Carolina dropped the first set on all six courts. The Tar Heels clinched victories on courts one, five, and six to secure the overall match win. Notable results included Reese Brantmeier of North Carolina defeating Kaitlyn Carnicella (6-2, 6-3), Anna Frey defeating Jane Dunyon (6-1, 6-1), and Thea Rabman defeating Lauren Friedman (6-3, 6-2).

Other matches were left unfinished as North Carolina reached four points needed for victory before all singles contests concluded.

With this result, South Carolina concludes its season while North Carolina advances further into the NCAA Tournament.
