South Carolina women’s tennis sweeps Charlotte and SC State in doubleheader

The South Carolina women’s tennis team, ranked No. 23 nationally, won both matches in a doubleheader on Saturday at the Carolina Tennis Center. The Gamecocks defeated Charlotte 4-0 in their first match and followed up with a 5-0 victory over SC State.

In doubles play against Charlotte, Kaitlyn Carnicella and Jane Dunyon secured a 6-3 win on court one. On court three, Jana Stojanova and Sara Borkop clinched the doubles point for South Carolina with a tiebreak victory. In singles, Helena Buchwald won in straight sets, while Carnicella earned an upset win over No. 76 Ni Xi, 6-2, 7-5. Stojanova also contributed with a two-set victory to secure the overall win.

Against SC State, Carnicella and Dunyon achieved a shutout in doubles with a 6-0 scoreline. Stojanova and Borkop followed with a decisive 6-1 win to earn the doubles point. In singles competition, Buchwald, Stojanova, Carnicella, and Dunyon all posted straight-set victories without allowing more than two games per set to their opponents.

Carnicella was notable for contributing two singles wins and two doubles wins across both matches.

South Carolina will begin conference play on Sunday, February 22 when they host top-ranked Georgia at the Carolina Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
