In the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings, four Gamecocks were recognized. Kaitlyn Carnciella holds the No. 80 spot in singles. In doubles, Lauren Friedman and Helena Buchwald are ranked No. 37, while Friedman and Sara Borkop are listed at No. 78. The pair of Friedman and Buchwald have started their season with a 3-0 record from the second doubles position.
South Carolina recently competed in the ITA Kickoff event, where they secured a 4-1 win over Miami (Fla.) before falling to No. 8 Duke by a score of 4-0.
Against Miami, Kaitlyn Carnicella and Taylor Goetz won their doubles match on court one after a close contest. Jane Dunyon and Jana Stojanova clinched the doubles point from court three with a 6-3 victory. In singles play, Helena Buchwald earned a straight-set win on court two (6-3, 6-3), followed by Sara Borkop’s victory on court three (6-4, 6-3). Taylor Goetz defeated No. 101 Sebastianna Scilipoti on court four (6-2, 7-5). Play was halted as Jane Dunyon was working to even her match after dropping the first set.
Facing Duke, Friedman and Buchwald posted a strong doubles performance with a convincing 6-2 win on court two. Carnicella and Goetz lost their match on court one, leaving the deciding point to Dunyon and Stojanova who forced a tiebreak but ultimately fell short as Duke claimed it 7-4 for the overall point.
In singles against Duke, both Dunyon and Stojanova won their opening sets before matches were stopped due to Duke clinching victory elsewhere. On court two, Buchwald was defeated in straight sets by Aspen Schuman. Carnicella challenged Liv Hovde but lost both sets narrowly (6-4, 6-4). Goetz dropped her first set closely to Shavit Kimchi before Kimchi took control in the second set.
Georgia Tech enters Saturday’s matchup with an overall record of 3-2 this season following wins over Chattanooga (6-1) and Jacksonville (4-0). Their losses came against top-ranked Auburn and Georgia teams earlier in the year. Last season, Georgia Tech finished with a record of 14 wins and advanced to the ACC Championship quarterfinals before losing to Duke; they also reached the second round of last year’s NCAA Championships after defeating Iowa but fell to eventual champion Georgia next.
Senior Alejandra Cruz is ranked No. 47 in singles according to this season’s initial ITA rankings.
Georgia Tech leads South Carolina in all-time meetings between these programs by seven wins to five; most recently they won last year’s encounter on February 8th, marking four out of five Gamecock victories occurring at home in Columbia.
