No. 23 South Carolina was defeated by No. 3 Texas, 3-0, in the second game of their SEC softball series on Saturday in Columbia. The Gamecocks limited Texas to five hits for the second consecutive game but were unable to generate offense, leaving six runners on base and being shut out for the first time this season.

Karley Shelton led South Carolina offensively with two hits in three at-bats. Jori Heard took the loss despite giving up only one unearned run over more than six innings and striking out five batters.

South Carolina had opportunities early, placing a runner on base in each of the first five innings. Their best scoring chance came in the third inning when Quincee Lilio reached on an error and Shelton added an infield single. Tori Ensley then singled to right field, but Lilio was thrown out at home while trying to score from second.

Texas broke the deadlock in the sixth inning after a Gamecock error and a double, then added two more runs in the seventh with a single.

The series will conclude Sunday at noon and will be broadcast on SEC Network.

“Despite limiting No. 3 Texas (21-1, 2-0) to five hits for the second straight game, No. 23 South Carolina (15-8, 0-2) dropped game two of its SEC softball series 3-0 Saturday afternoon (Mar. 7).”
