The South Carolina Gamecocks track and field team took part in the first day of the East Coast Relays in Jacksonville, Fla., according to a May 1 announcement. The team participated in seven events, with notable performances from both the men’s and women’s squads.
Akala Garrett won the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.36, while Jathiyah Muhammad secured first place in the women’s pole vault by clearing 4.10 meters. Both athletes are transfers, with Garrett coming from Texas and Muhammad from Arizona.
Kymora-Lee Williams achieved a personal best of 23.18 seconds to finish eighth overall in the women’s 200 meters. On the men’s side, Robert Stitts Jr. also set a new personal record by running 20.65 seconds for sixth place in the men’s 200 meters.
Khaliq Muhammad earned third place for South Carolina’s men’s team after clearing 5.15 meters in the pole vault event. Other results included Brandon Dennis finishing fourth in men’s shot put with a distance of 16.58 meters, while Kyndall Harrington-Spain placed fourth in women’s 400-meter hurdles at 57.45 seconds.
The competition will continue tomorrow at Hodges Stadium, starting with the men’s preliminary round for the 110-meter hurdles at 11:30 a.m., concluding later that afternoon with relay events.
