The University of South Carolina baseball team lost to Louisiana State University, 6-1, in the first game of a day-night doubleheader on May 2 at Alex Box Stadium.
The loss puts pressure on South Carolina as they prepare for the second game later in the evening. The outcome is significant for both teams as they continue their seasons and look to improve their records.
South Carolina took an early lead with back-to-back doubles from Talmadge LeCroy and Ethan Lizama in the first inning. However, LSU responded quickly by scoring two runs on four hits in their half of the inning. The Tigers extended their lead with three more runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Steven Milam. LSU added another unearned run in the fourth.
Despite getting their first two hitters on base in the eighth inning, South Carolina was unable to mount a comeback after a flyout and two strikeouts ended their threat. Lizama drove in South Carolina’s only run, while Amp Phillips took the loss after pitching six innings and allowing five earned runs on eight hits. Parker Marlatt pitched two scoreless innings of relief and struck out three batters.
According to postgame notes provided by South Carolina, Will Craddock extended his streak of reaching base to ten games with a single during his first at-bat. Marlatt lowered his earned run average (ERA) in Southeastern Conference games to 3.27. This contest marked South Carolina’s return to Baton Rouge for the first time since 2021.
South Carolina will face LSU again tonight at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time (6:30 p.m. Central Time) for game two of the doubleheader, which will be streamed live on SEC Network Plus.
