South Carolina baseball defeats USC Upstate after late offensive surge

The University of South Carolina baseball team secured a 12-3 victory over USC Upstate on Tuesday night at Founders Park. The Gamecocks broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning, scoring five runs and adding nine runs over their final three innings.

South Carolina started strong with three runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run double from KJ Scobey. USC Upstate responded with two runs in the fifth and tied the game with another run in the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, South Carolina capitalized on two errors to put Scobey on third base. He scored on a double by Luke Yuhasz. Aaron Jamison followed with an RBI single, and Dawson Harman doubled to bring in another run. Patrick Evans then hit his first home run of the game, giving South Carolina an 8-3 lead.

The Gamecocks added three more runs in the seventh inning, including a two-run home run by Logan Sutter and an RBI groundout from Harman. Evans finished South Carolina’s scoring with his second home run in the eighth inning.

Evans went 4-for-5 at the plate, scoring three times and driving in three runs. Yuhasz contributed three hits and scored twice, while Scobey and Ethan Lizama each had two hits.

Logan Prisco made his first start of the season for South Carolina, striking out five batters over four-plus innings while allowing two hits and one unearned run. Cooper Parks earned the win after recording one strikeout in a third of an inning.

“Carolina used seven pitchers on the night with Patrick Dudley closing out the game by going the final two innings,” according to postgame notes from South Carolina’s staff. “Carolina had 16 hits on the night with eight players having at least one hit on the night.” The notes also stated: “Evans and Scobey each scored three runs in the win.” Additionally, “Carolina struck out 13 batters in the win.”

South Carolina will next host Charleston Southern on Wednesday night at Founders Park. The game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on SEC Network Plus.
