South Carolina athletes set records at Wake Forest Invitational

South Carolina Track & Field athletes competed at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on April 16, with several setting personal and school records during the opening night of the two-day meet.

The event was notable for Elijah Poore’s performance in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase. Poore set both a personal best and a school record by finishing in 8:57.36, which earned him second place in his section and moved him to 28th overall in the regional rankings.

In other men’s events, Kaleb Burroughs ran a personal best of 1:49.01 in the 800 meters to secure second place honors. Knox Eaton finished sixth in his section with a time of 1:52.63, while Edouard Lecrivain placed eighth with a time of 1:48.78. Carlos Lanzagorta-Ruiz did not finish his race.

On the women’s side, Sylvia Chelangat finished fifth in her section of the 800 meters with a time of 2:05.99. Teresa Cherotich also took fifth place in her steeplechase season opener with a time of 10:03.27, which placed her third overall in the NCAA East Regional ranking for that event.

The South Carolina team will continue competing as they close out the Wake Forest Invitational and begin participation at the Tom Jones Memorial meet in Gainesville, Florida.
