The Southern Company Peach Bowl Challenge charity golf tournament was canceled on Apr. 28 due to inclement weather, according to an announcement from organizers. The event, which was in its 19th year and scheduled at Reynolds Lake Oconee outside Atlanta, was called off after three holes because of unplayable conditions following significant rainfall.
Despite the cancellation, the $312,000 charity purse will be divided equally among the 26 current and former head coaches who participated in the event. Each coach will receive $12,000 for their chosen charity. Some of the beneficiaries include the Beamer Family Foundation (Shane Beamer), MJ&M (Mack Brown), Durham Public Schools Foundation (Manny Diaz), One Pack Empowered (Dave Doeren), Edsall Family Foundation (Randy Edsall), Row the Boat Fleck Family Fund (P.J. Fleck), and several others.
Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and President Gary Stokan said, “We really tried to get the full tournament in, but mother nature had other plans.” He added, “Even though the weather didn’t cooperate this year, the event was still a success at the end of the day as we raised $312,000 for 26 different charities.”
Since its inception in 2007, this annual event has contributed a total of $10.3 million to scholarships and charities. Organizers say these efforts have helped make Peach Bowl, Inc. college football’s most charitable bowl organization.
Looking ahead, participants and organizers remain committed to supporting charitable causes through future tournaments despite setbacks like this year’s cancellation.
