Fairfield County Veterans Affairs hosted the fifth annual Veterans Expo at the Boykin Recreation Center on March 27. Albertha Woodard, Director of Fairfield County Veterans Affairs, said the event was created to highlight resources available to veterans and their families beyond traditional benefits. “Initially the thought was to put on an event to highlight some of the resources available around the county and state, which go beyond their benefits and compensation. There are resources that provide housing, food, home care and basically any resource that is available to Veterans. Survivors of Veterans are also eligible to receive these benefits and may not be previously aware of all the services available to them.”

The expo draws about 200 veterans and 30 exhibitors each year. Organizers say it helps veterans connect with important services as well as with each other. Woodard said, “The response from the Veterans has been overwhelming. Not only can they find out more information about the benefits and resources available to them but they find appreciation. A few years ago, we started the Veterans Expo and a Veterans Day Luncheon, where we honor the service and sacrifice of our military servicemen and servicewomen. Sometimes the Veteran community feels left out; when doing events like these, it’s more than finding out information, it’s about the fellowship. Sharing stories and experiences with others that have served is a great way to honor these amazing people. We are excited anytime we get a chance to recognize our Fairfield County Veterans.”

Food for this year’s expo was sponsored by Senator Everett Stubbs along with Gaston, Marion, Stubbs, Hunter & Swancy Law Firm; Darryel Davis and Joe Siebles from Two Men and a Grill prepared meals for attendees.

Fairfield County offers many programs aimed at improving quality of life for residents through recreation activities such as sports leagues, gymnastics classes, health programs according to its official website. The county also enriches local culture through festivals, art galleries, museums and historic sites as noted on its website. Facilities include an airport with a 5,243-foot runway as well as libraries and senior centers outlined online.

Educational opportunities in Fairfield County include recognition for excellence in math- and science-focused magnet schools according to county sources. The county partners with organizations such as Lake Marion Regional Water Agency in efforts supporting growth as noted by officials.

Fairfield County is located in South Carolina’s upper Piedmont region where it focuses on enhancing community life through business development while preserving natural features like rivers alongside cultural events according to its official site.

Woodard concluded her remarks by thanking local veterans: “To the Veterans of Fairfield County, thank you for your courage, sacrifice and unwavering dedication to our country. Your service has protected our freedoms and strengthened our community. We are deeply grateful for all that you have done and continue to do.”
