Ella Lucas, a junior discus thrower for the South Carolina track and field team, spoke on Apr. 27 about her journey through multiple injuries and surgeries during her collegiate career. Despite a strong start as a freshman, Lucas faced significant setbacks due to health issues but said perseverance, faith, and support from Gamecock Athletics helped her recover both physically and mentally.
Lucas said she would not change anything about what happened to her over the past two years. “It was really challenging, but I wouldn’t change a thing in what’s happened to me,” Lucas said. “I’ve learned so much, and I’m a different person on the other side of it now. I wouldn’t be who I am without those trials.”
Her athletic background began early with inspiration from her brother David, who competed successfully at Penn State. In high school at Warwick High School in Pennsylvania, she became an All-American discus thrower and state champion before joining South Carolina.
During her freshman year of college competition, Lucas experienced pain that led to surgery for a bilateral sports hernia after the season ended in summer 2024. When recovery did not go as planned, she underwent another surgery in summer 2025 for bilateral cam hip impingement—a condition involving excess bone growth on both hip joints.
Lucas described how these experiences challenged her mental health but credited resources provided by South Carolina Athletics—including trainers, coaches, teammates, friends and family—with helping her endure difficult times: “It was the support system that we have here at South Carolina that got me through… Everyone here made a difference in making sure I was still enjoying my sport and enjoying who I am.”
She also found value meeting with Director of Sport Leadership and Mental Performance Dr. Raylene Ross throughout this period. Taking on new roles such as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council further helped rebuild confidence outside athletics.
Looking ahead this season after returning to training in January following six months’ recovery from surgery last year—Lucas focused first on being healthy enough to compete again: “My goal this season was just to be healthy and compete,” she said.
Lucas opened the 2026 outdoor season by winning the discus event at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational despite feeling nervous beforehand: “I had the craziest nerves of my life before that meet… Luckily I was able to put some things together… There were a lot of emotions.” She concluded by saying faith continues guiding her through challenges: “I wouldn’t be able to get through anything I’ve done without God on my side… There is always so much peace in knowing that God has a plan.”
