University of South Carolina baseball pitcher Amp Phillips was named Southeastern Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week, according to an April 13 announcement from the league office.
The recognition comes after Phillips delivered a standout performance in Friday night’s game against Missouri, where he pitched eight-plus innings and allowed only five hits with no runs. He also recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts and issued just one walk. His effort contributed to South Carolina’s first 1-0 win since March of last year.
Phillips retired the first ten batters he faced, striking out seven of them, and set down the side in order during six different innings. Out of his 103 pitches, 74 were strikes. With this performance, Phillips lowered his earned run average to 2.17 overall and to 1.42 in conference play.
Phillips is the second Gamecock this season to earn SEC Pitcher of the Week honors; Josh Gunther received it on March 2. Will Craddock was previously named SEC Freshman of the Week on February 23.
Phillips shares this week’s pitching honor with Auburn’s Alex Petrovic. Other weekly conference awards went to Arkansas’ TJ Pompey as Player of the Week and Tennessee’s Cam Appenzeller as Freshman of the Year.
South Carolina will begin a nine-game homestand starting Tuesday, April 14, when they host Davidson at home. The game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start and will be streamed on SEC Network Plus.
