Amp Phillips struck out 10 batters and did not allow a run in eight innings as the University of South Carolina baseball team defeated Missouri 1-0 on April 10 at Taylor Stadium, securing a series victory.
The only run of the game came in the top of the fourth inning. Tyler Bak tripled for South Carolina’s first hit and then scored on a throwing error after Talmadge LeCroy grounded to shortstop. The Gamecocks managed three hits in total: Bak’s triple, a double from Ethan Lizama, and a single by Patrick Evans.
Phillips set a season-high for strikeouts while walking just one batter and allowing five hits. He retired seven of the first nine hitters via strikeout and had six perfect innings, picking up his third win of the year. Connor Chicoli recorded one strikeout in relief before Alex Philpott secured his second save by getting the final out.
Missouri threatened in the bottom of the ninth with two leadoff hits but was stopped when an attempted double steal resulted in an out at third base. A subsequent strikeout and flyout ended the game.
According to postgame notes, this was South Carolina’s first 1-0 victory since March 9, 2025 against Morehead State. Phillips finished one strikeout shy of matching his career high set last year against Winthrop at USC Upstate. It also marked South Carolina’s third shutout this season and its first shutout in Southeastern Conference play since defeating Kentucky 10-0 on April 28, 2024.
South Carolina will conclude its three-game series against Missouri on Saturday afternoon.
